Splitting or merging on Mac is, in fact, extremely simple. You can take advantage of the inbuilt Disk Utility feature to do that without the need for installing third-party software. However, there are still many Mac users, especially the new ones, who do not know how to partition on Mac. In this guide, I will walk you through steps to partition your Mac hard drive running on macOS Mojave or newer versions.

When You Should Partition Hard Drive

If your Mac hard drive has more than 128GB and you need a new partition for storing other data to avoid losing it

When You Should NOT Partition Hard Drive

  • Your hard drive is only 128GB. After installing macOS, it already takes up about 20GB. With installing other software like Photoshop, Microsoft Office, the leftover free space on the drive is just 70GB. Time to time, you will need to clean up your hard drive since it will be fulfilled
  • You are using a macOS version that is lower than Mojave and intend to install Bootcamp. Since installing Windows through BootCamp, it requires your Mac not to partition the hard drive and you need to run it with Bootcamp Assistant. When you install Windows on Mac, it requires you to merge the hard drive so that you can do that. ( In macOS Mojave, you can install Windows on your mac without merging partitions on your Mac).

Step 4: Set a new name, choose the format ( it should be APFS) and partition size

Step 5: Click on Apply and wait for Disk Utility to process. Once done, you will have a message and it has two partitions.

Merge The Hard Drive

Note: Splitting your hard drive will not cause the data loss. But, merging the hard drive will lose all the data in the selected partition. So, you should back it up first before merging.

Step 1: To merge your drive, open Disk Utility first

Step 2: Click on Partition option

Step 3: When you see a popup message, click on Partition

select Partition to merge drive

Step 4: Now, select the DATA partition, not the partition containing macOS and click on “-“
